Giveawaybest.com – Is God of War Ragnarok the Best Sequel Ever? Our Full Review!
The God of War Ragnarok series has always been a heavy hitter in the gaming world, and Ragnarok the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s God of War does not disappoint.
After a few years of waiting (and a few trailers to fuel the hype), Ragnarok takes everything fans loved about the first game and cranks it up to 11. From jaw-dropping combat to an even more epic story, God of War Ragnarok is everything we hoped for and more.
Story: The Battle for the Nine Realms
The mighty Ragnarok is looming on the horizon, and Kratos and his son Atreus find themselves right in the middle of it all. This isn’t your typical “save the world” storyline. If you’ve played God of War (2018), you’ll be familiar with the world, characters, and some deep themes surrounding Kratos and Atreus.
But even if it’s your first time diving into the Norse saga, Ragnarok offers enough context to get you invested in its massive, world-ending narrative. The game shines regarding the father-son dynamic between Kratos and Atreus. The overarching theme of family, sacrifice, and breaking free from past mistakes is woven through every moment, giving Ragnarok a lot more depth than just another action-packed journey.
The story is full of surprises too unexpected twists, intense moments of betrayal, and a whole lot of drama. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that the stakes are high, and not everything goes according to plan. Characters like Freya, Thor, and Odin are all given enough time to shine, and they each bring something unique to the table in terms of personality, motivations, and backstory.
Characters: The Faces of Ragnarok
Speaking of characters, this game is full of them. And we’re not just talking about Kratos and Atreus. The game expands its roster and lets you spend more time with characters that we only got a glimpse of in the last game. Of course, Kratos is the star, and his journey is as emotionally charged as ever.
But it’s not just about Kratos anymore. Atreus, voiced by Sunny Suljic, goes through some pretty major growth here, transitioning from that naive boy into a more self-assured young man trying to figure out who he is. Then, there’s Freya. We all remember how heart-wrenching her story was in the first game, and Ragnarok takes her character even further into the emotional deep end.
She’s no longer just a supporting character she’s a major player in the drama that unfolds, and her grief and rage over losing her son Baldur make her one of the most interesting figures in the entire game. We also get to know Thor and Odin a lot better. Thor is brutal, flawed, and dealing with his own set of issues particularly his relationship with his father, Odin.
Odin himself is just as manipulative as you’d expect, but he’s also deeply tragic in his way, giving him more layers than just the villain we thought he might be. Each character has its arc and impact on the story, making Ragnarok feel alive with personalities that drive the plot forward.
Combat: Bigger, Badder, and Better Than Ever
Now, let’s talk about combat. If you thought the combat in the last game was intense, you’re in for a treat here. Ragnarok takes everything you love about the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos and cranks it up. The combat is as satisfying and brutal as before, but now there are more ways to make your enemies wish they’d never crossed your path.
Whether you’re tossing your axe like a boomerang or swinging the Blades of Chaos around, the combat is never dull. One of the coolest new mechanics is the revamped shield system. Instead of just blocking, you can use your shield to knock back enemies, attack with it, and even parry with more precision.
This gives the combat more depth and makes it feel more dynamic than ever before. Boss fights are another highlight. If you thought God of War (2018) had great boss battles, Ragnarok takes it to the next level. Some of these battles are truly jaw-dropping in scale and design. Each boss feels unique, with their own set of moves and weaknesses.
Exploration: A World Worth Getting Lost In
Exploring the Nine Realms in Ragnarok is an absolute blast. The world is stunning, with each realm offering a unique visual experience that draws from its slice of Norse mythology. Whether you’re in the icy plains of Jotunheim or the fiery forges of Svartalfheim, every area feels like it has its own identity and secrets to uncover.
The level design is expansive and detailed, with tons of side areas to explore and puzzles to solve. Every corner hides something, from collectibles and lore to powerful upgrades and hidden enemies. Speaking of puzzles, the game mixes environmental puzzles with combat challenges, requiring players to think creatively.
Some puzzles are simple, while others will have you scratching your head for a while, but they never feel like a chore. They break up the action and add an extra layer of satisfaction when you figure it out.
Side Content: Not Just Filling the Void
While the main story is already huge, Ragnarok offers plenty of side content that’s worth your time. The Favours (side quests) are varied and often reveal more about the world and its characters.
Some of them even tie into the main plot, offering rewards that make them feel meaningful instead of just tacked-on content. Plus, the post-game stuff is packed with tough boss fights, hidden treasures, and new areas to explore, making sure you’re never short on things to do.
Graphics and Sound: A Visual and Auditory Masterpiece
Let’s not forget how stunning this game looks. The visuals are downright breathtaking, with incredibly detailed environments, realistic lighting, and character models that look like they’ve stepped straight out of a movie.
Ragnarok is a visual spectacle, and it’s easy to get lost just by looking at all the beautiful, immersive landscapes. And the sound design? Top-notch. Bear McCreary’s score is emotional and epic, enhancing the highs and lows of the story.
The voice acting in God of War Ragnarok is perfect, with each character bringing their A-game to make the world feel more alive. From intense battle cries to tender moments between Kratos and Atreus, the sound design helps pull you deeper into this rich, emotional story.
